Curriculum & Instruction
Altimira Middle School works hard to surpass the academic guidelines established by the California Department of Education by providing a challenging and engaging curriculum for our students.
Altimira Middle School Curriculum
Altimira Middle School follows
California State and Sonoma Valley Unified District guidelines.
The school district has adopted content standards and Multiple Measures assessments. These assessments allow teachers, students and parents to see where individuals
are in reaching and/or exceeding District Standards. The measures
will determine whether the student has successfully learned grade
level standards. The results of these measures will enable our
teachers to teach to your child's individual needs and strengths.

Academic Achievement
We have a three-tier academic achievement system for recognizing students. The system is as follows:
Academic Excellence - 4.0 GPA*
Honor Roll - 3.5 - 3.9 GPA*
Academic Recognition - 3.0 - 3.49 GPA*
Recognition will be given at the 8th grade promotion ceremony for students who have maintained a 4.0 GPA* for the first eight trimesters, plus the six-week progress report of the last trimester of their 8th grade year.
Report Cards
The school year is divided into trimesters. Report cards are distributed three times during the school year: December 4, March 19, and June 13. Between report cards, a mid-trimester Progress Report will be sent home with your student: October 16, January 29, and April 30. Parents should expect to see either a progress report or report card every six to seven weeks. This is a crucial communication of your child's progress at school. Parents should contact the school if they have not received one of these reports.
Promotion CriteriaAt each grade level, students are candidates for retention if they earn five or more F's in a year, or if they do not pass exit skills tests in language arts or math. Students in either of these categories must attend and pass summer school to advance to the next grade. Eighth graders with five or more F's cannot participate in the promotion ceremony or attend the promotion dance. Eighth grade students who fail exit skills and do not participate in remediation will also not participate in the promotion ceremony or dance.
Text BooksStudents
are issued textbooks to use at home for homework assignments. These
textbooks and any checked out library materials are the respnsibility
of the student until returned. Textbooks and library materials must be
returned at the end of the year or when moving. Students will be
charged replacement costs for lost or damaged texts and any library
materials. Failure to do so could result in disciplinary action (LOP*)
. Fines and bills are paid in the library. Failure to pay for and/or
return library or textbooks will result in students not receiving
take-home texts the following year.
*Loss of privilege - students may not attend dances or special student activities or have a report card mailed home. They will not be able to attend any extracurricular activities including dances, assemblies, after-school sports as a participant or spectator, and club activities.
