As the new school year begins, I wanted to take a moment to welcome you to
In just a few weeks, school will be in full swing, and students should consistently have homework assignments, projects, and test preparation to complete in the evenings. Your child’s teachers are working together to create an exceptional educational opportunity for your child this year. If you find that your student could use a little extra assistance in any class, encourage them to speak to the teacher and their counselor about getting some assistance. The Altimira After School program, ASPIRES, will start its second year and we hope that all of our students take advantage of this program and the assistance it has given to so many of our students.
There are some changes as well this year at Altimira. Students will be on a Block Schedule that will have them taking 3 classes per day, with each class running approximately 95 minutes- please see the planner for the exact times. Also, we have adjusted the start and end time of school. School will begin at 8:45 AM everyday and end at 3:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and at 2:00 on Wednesdays.
To help ensure student safety, it is extremely important that parents and students observe all traffic rules during drop off and pick up. We are also asking parents to remind students to use the crosswalks when crossing the street whether you are riding a bike or walking. Please encourage your student to maintain safe, respectful and responsible behavior before and after school to avoid disciplinary action.
Your student will soon receive their Handbook/Planner. Please make sure your student keeps this Handbook/Planner handy as it contains critical information, including calendar dates and phone numbers, for use throughout the year. The planner contains a place for your student to write down all their assignments, projects and tests. Please review your students’ planner with them nightly and support them in meeting their academic responsibilities.

One of the most vital components for student success at Altimira is parent involvement. If you are able to, please attend our Parent Network Meetings or our English Language Advisory Council (ELAC) Meetings that will be held the second Monday of each month. As the Principal of your student’s school, it is my job to keep you informed and updated on what is happening at Altimira. Al empezar este año escolar nuevo, deseo tomar un momento para darle la bienvenida a la Escuela Secundaria Altimira. En el tiempo relativamente corto que llevo en esta comunidad, ya me he dado cuenta de que realmente es un honor ser parte de la comunidad de la Escuela Secundaria Altimira. Me siento realmente privilegiado de poder trabajar con un personal sobresaliente, estudiantes excelentes y padres de familia involucrados en la educación de sus hijos.
En una cuantas semanas, la escuela estará en pleno apogeo, y todas las noches, de manera consistente, los estudiantes tendrán que completar sus asignaturas de tarea, proyectos y preparación para los exámenes. Welcome to the Altimira E-Alert! This online version of our newsletter will be updated frequently, so please check it often for the latest news. The standard paper version of the Altimira Alert will be printed and mailed home four (4) times a year, fall(Oct/Nov/Dec), winter (Jan/Feb), spring (Mar/Apr/May), and summer (May/June). We are attempting to cut costs and reduce paper usage by reducing the number of paper editions that we publish and send home. Another benefit of having the newsletter online, is that we can regularly update it and you can view it online as often as you like.

To insure that you receive the yearbook in June, bring cash or a check made out to AMS Yearbook to Ms. Roberts in A1. Parents, you can also drop off an envelope with the check and your child's name to the main office. If you prefer, you may also order your yearbook online at jostens.com.

Our new student data base program, Power School, is up and running. You should have received information on your student's Progress Report regarding the process for accessing the Power School Parent Portal. We have provided a link for you to use to access the Power School Parent Portal on this website under the "News" tab. You can check your child's attendance, grades and communicate with your child's teachers. If you are having trouble accessing the Power School Parent Portal, feel free to contact our main office at 935.6020 and we can assist you.

The Altimira Middle School Site Council meets a minimum of four times a year. The Council consists of Administration, Certificated and Classified employees, and parents. You may read the SPSA in the office, or download the link attached.

REMINDERS
Student drop-off and pick up is only allowed in the front of the front of the school; no cars are allowed in the Bus Circle and no student drop-off or pick-up is allowed in the staff parking lots. Please see page 5 of the AMS Student/Parent Handbook for more information.
Parents and all other visitors must register and obtain a visitor's sticker in the Main Office every time they visit the campus. Please see page 2 of the AMS Student/Parent Handbook for more information.
Students must comply with the SVUSD Middle & High Schools Dress Code daily. Please remind your student and ensure that he/she is dressed appropriately before leavign for school each morning. Please see pages 11 &12 of the AMS Student/Parent Handbook for more information.
